Mid
Canterbury 15A 4 v 1 CBHS 15A 14 July 2010
Another
trip to Ashburton again failed to deliver a favourable result. With
a full squad of players CBHS were looking to overturn the result
from the last visit. Unfortunately Boys' High were a goal down early
in the game when Tom Fitall fumbled the ball whilst attempting a
save and the ball fell for Mid Canterbury to poke into the net.
CBHS hit back immediately when Mitch Hobson played a 'one-two' with
Oliver Fussey and then from 25 metres out struck a wonderful shot
that went over the goalkeeper's outstretched arms and under the
crossbar. A rash decision made by Fitall to race out of his area
in the hope of clearing a long through ball gave Mid Canterbury
a second goal.
In
the second half CBHS fought hard to gain parity in the midfield
and were unlucky not to equalise when a powerfully struck free kick
by Dorian Grault was headed the wrong side of the post by Fussey.
Mid Canterbury took the game away from CBHS when they scored a well
worked goal from down the right wing. Abdul Kalifi went close to
pulling a goal back after a good run into the box but his shot was
saved at the near post. Late in the game Mid Canterbury was gifted
a fourth goal when a diagonal free kick loped into the box and was
allowed to bounce before entering the goal untouched.
Stanley
Roper, Tim Stevens and Justin Rangi stood out in defence and Sean
Zumbraegel, Grault and Hobson worked hard in midfield but in reality
Boys' High's defence was stretched far too often.

15A 1 v 3 Canterbury Academy 7 August 2010
On
a fine morning at Ray Blank Park CBHS played some good football
but were out manoeuvred by the skilful Academy boys.
In
the first half Canterbury dominated the midfield and put the Boys'
High defence under a lot of pressure. Solid defending from Justin
Rangi, Stanley Roper, Tim Stevens and Jae Youn Lee, plus a couple
of outstanding saves from Tom Fitall, kept Canterbury scoreless.
CBHS put together some good moves of their own but the closest they
came to scoring was when Mitch Hobson headed over the bar from an
Oliver Fussey corner.
In
the second half the midfield area was much more evenly contested
with Sean Zumbraegel and Hamish Weld to the fore with some good
work out wide by Dorian Grault and Nick Williams. CBHS took the
lead when Hobson struck a superb free kick from the edge of the
penalty area directly into the net. Canterbury hit back when the
referee, who shall be nameless, apparently missed an offside and
although Boys' High made three attempts to clear the danger the
ball fell to one of the opposition to score. The Academy team then
struck twice more from moves down the right hand side which were
crossed into the box.
CBHS
can hold their heads high; they played their part in a good game
of football.
Burwood
0 v 2 CBHS 31 July 2010
There
was no applause from the travelling fans this week. CBHS were relieved
to have played so badly, yet still have managed to take home the
points. Burwood were a lot hungrier for possession than Boys' High
and maintained their hunger throughout the match.
CBHS
lacked precision both in control and accuracy and were made to look
very ordinary by a poor but determined Burwood team. Boys' High
did however manage to show the occasional glimpse of good football.
They took the lead half way through the first half when Oliver Fussey
cleanly finished off a fine through ball by Justin Rangi. This goal
failed to diminish Burwood's effort and they went close to equalising
with a header from a corner which was blocked on the line by Jae
Youn Lee.
The
second half was played in similar vein, although CBHS bolstered
their midfield with Tim Stevens and later on Stanley Roper. This
enabled Mitch Hobson to gain more control of this area hence lessening
Burwood's possession. Boys' High still struggled to mount many attacks
of their own and it wasn't until late in the match that they increased
their lead. Hobson fed Fussey who chipped across the box to Ben
Lyttle whose low cross was met at the far post by Dorian Grault.
Burwood fought until the end, having a shot cleared off the line
by Rangi. Sean Zumbraegel was instrumental in thwarting other attacks
by the Burwood team and the score remained 2-0.
Waimak
15A 0 v 6 CBHS 15A -17 July 2010
CBHS
travelled to Kendall Park with only eleven players and were also
asked by the referee to play in a change of strip; North Canterbury
yellow. Undaunted by this and with a score to settle from their
last meeting, CBHS took the game to Waimak once they had mastered
the tricky underfoot conditions.
Boys'
High used the flanks to good effect, Will Rykers and Dorian Grault
linking well down the left and Jae Youn Lee and Abdul Kalifi on
the right. Ben Lyttle and Oliver Fussey were busy upfront with Nick
Williams and Greg Moore controlling the midfield. Grault opened
the scoring with a first time finish from a diagonal ball from Fussey.
This was followed by two penalties clinically put away by Mitch
Hobson; the first one for hand ball and the second one for an horrendous
challenge on Grault who was through on goal. Grault took the half-time
lead to 4-0 when he headed in at the far post from a Fussey corner.
CBHS
started the second half surprisingly sluggishly and had the back
four of Lee, Stanley Roper, Hobson and Rykers plus the continued
good form of goalkeeper Tom Fitall to thank for keeping Waimak scoreless.
Waimak also did themselves no favours by hitting the crossbar with
a penalty attempt after their striker was adjudged to have been
impeded. Good work from Lee and Williams down the right hand side
put Fussey away and his well executed shot on the run beat the keeper
to make it five. The scoring was finished by Williams who blasted
in a shot across the goal by Fussey.
CBHS
fully deserved the applause at the end of the game from the travelling
fans. Waimak were no easy beats but Boys' High played with great
team spirit and at times great skill.
CBHS
15A 4 v 1 Woolston Tech - 3 July 2010
Playing
on a very sticky pitch at Edgar McIntosh Park CBHS struggled to
come to terms with the conditions and Woolston's style of play.
Time and again long balls forward by Woolston put Boys' High under
pressure and in the 15th minute Woolston took the lead when their
striker was left unmarked on the right hand side of the penalty
area.
In the unusual position of being behind on the scoreboard at half-time,
CBHS had to knuckle down and stay patient. Although Woolston continued
to cause problems at the beginning of the second half, hitting the
post and making Tom Fitall pull off a great save; Boys' High eventually
gained the ascendency. Two scavenging goals from Ben Lyttle breathed
new life into CBHS and when Lyttle completed his hat-trick with
a great finish after good passes from Mitch Hobson and Nick Williams,
they looked a lot more comfortable in every position. Hobson headed
in the fourth from a well placed corner by Dorian Grault in the
last minute of the game.
Stanley
Roper and Tim Stevens eventually stamped their authority at the
back and Hamish Weld and Hobson shone in the centre of midfield
but Player of The Day was Fitall, whose saves prevented Woolston
from gaining too big an advantage.
CBHS
15A 2 v 1 Avon 15A - 19 June 2010
CBHS bounced
back from last week's disappointment to defeat table topping Avon.
Boys' High's performance was much more energetic and focused than
their previous game. This was even more satisfying since three regular
players were away representing school at cross country running.
Avon, who were
big, fast and physical started well but CBHS were stoic in their
resistance and began to put their own moves together. Mitchell Ross,
on his debut, was instrumental in setting up the first goal. After
a good run down the left wing his inside pass found Oliver Fussey
with time and space. From 30 metres out, Fussey picked his spot
and postage stamped the ball in to the top right hand corner of
the goal. Avon responded with a string of attacks but solid defending
coupled with two great saves from Tom Fitall frustrated their efforts.
CBHS took a two goal lead later in the half when a long ball forward
by Will Rykers was chipped on by Abdul Kalifi. Ben Lyttle beat the
goalkeeper to the bouncing ball to bundle it into the net. Hamish
Weld went close to adding a third after beating three defenders
on a great solo run towards goal but unfortunately put his shot
over the bar.
Soon after the
restart Avon got their goal, but although they gave the CBHS defence
a good workout, they couldn't find an equaliser. Weld, Justin Rangi
and Tim Stevens were rock solid and in midfield, Ross, Nick Williams,
Dorian Grault and Sean Zumbaegel gave 100 percent.
Mid
Canterbury 15A 2 v 1 CBHS 15A - 12 June 2010
The trip to
Ashburton went unrewarded due in the main to a lack-lustre performance
from CBHS. The Boys' High team were no where near their usual selves,
throughout the first half the quality of the passing was well below
the standards they have previously set themselves. The second half
performance was better but they had to battle the wind and were
unfortunate to suffer a string of injuries.
CBHS took the
lead after 15 minutes when a long clearance from Hamish Weld resulted
in a route one goal. The ball carried over the heads of the Mid
Canterbury defence and Oliver Fussey raced onto it and stroked the
ball past the advancing goalie. Mid Canterbury equalised just before
half time with a goal in similar fashion although this time CBHS's
goalie Tom Fitall made a partial save and Mid Canterbury needed
a second attempt to score.
In the second
half CBHS put together some impressive moves upfront but couldn't
find a team mate with the final pass or cross. Nick Williams and
Mitch Hobson worked hard in midfield with good support from Weld
and Tim Stevens in defence. Fitall made one great save but was unfortunately
beaten near the end of the game by Mid Canterbury's impressive number
6.
CBHS
15A 1 v 2 Canterbury Academy - 5 June 2010
Undefeated Canterbury
Academy was CBHS's next opponent and the expected difficult challenge
did not disappoint. Without doubt this was the best game of football
that the team have been involved in thus far. The Academy team had
17 skilful players on display, passing to feet and using the full
width of the pitch. CBHS knew they would have to do likewise and
they responded brilliantly. They did so despite two central defenders
being unavailable to play and with a little more luck could have
had at least a draw from this game.
CBHS took the
lead after good work by Greg Moore and Nick Williams provided Ben
Lyttle with a heading chance, his first attempt was parried by the
goalkeeper but he headed home with his second. Shortly before half-time
Canterbury equalised with a well struck shot from their left winger
who appeared to be in an offside position.
In the second
half most of the play took place between the two penalty boxes.
Jae Youn Lee and Hamish Weld where outstanding in defence for Boys'
High and Tom Fitall pulled off a great save but Canterbury scored
the winner with a shot that came down just over the line after hitting
the underside of the crossbar.
BURWOOD
15A 0 v 8 CBHS 15A - 22nd May 2010
CBHS were keen
to get back to winning ways after last weeks unfortunate loss and
a mid-week defeat against the visiting Timaru Boys High School
2nd XI ( 1-2 ). The margin of victory could and should have been
greater if they had played as well as they have so far this season
but the accuracy of the teams passing was below par and again
some of the players forgot how to communicate.
The first goal
was probably the pick, Mitch Hobson found Ben Lyttle who headed
on into the path of Oliver Fussey whose shot was sweetly struck
into the top of the net. Boys High went close to a second
goal several times before Will Rykers took a return ball from Dorian
Grault and his low shot from outside the box found its way to the
goal through a crowd of players. This was added to by Lyttle who
finished off a cross from Grault and then Fussey scored his second
when he slotted in a great diagonal cross from Justin Rangi.
Goals in the
second half came firstly from Grault, tapping in a short cross from
Sean Zumbraegel. Secondly by Hobson who steered the ball into the
net from a flick into the box by Fussey and Hobson scored again
this time with his head from a cross by Grault. Lyttle grabbed his
second goal and finished the scoring at the far post from a long
diagonal ball by Rykers.
CBHSs
defence were again solid and some good midfield work was shown by
Rangi and Nick Williams.
CBHS
15A 0 v 1 WAIMAK 15A - 15 May 2010
CBHS had their
toughest encounter this week against a committed Waimak team, suffering
their first defeat. The fact that they lost was down to their lack
of precision in front of goal, CBHS played good football and had
the larger number of chances but couldn't beat the Waimak goalkeeper.

In the first
half Stanley Roper hit the bar with a long range effort and Hamish
Weld and Dorian Grault went close with headers. Oliver Fussey and
Mitch Hobson were guilty of shooting straight at the keeper and
Ben Lyttle was unlucky to have another effort just tipped over the
bar. CBHS's defence did have some anxious moments and had goalkeeper
Tom Fitall to thank on more than a couple of occasions.
The second half
continued in the same vein. The CBHS midfield had to battle for
everything with Greg Moore tireless in his efforts. Grault shone
on the left wing and in defence Justin Rangi and Tim Stevens were
solid. Although the work-rate and structure of the team were sound,
it was the inability to convert chances into goals that let them
down this week. Waimak scored the winning goal in the dying minutes
when a miss-directed throw in by CBHS was latched onto and crossed
into the box for their diminutive left winger to nod home unmarked.
Cashmere
15A 1 v 5 CBHS 15A - 8th May 2010
CBHS were a
little slower at getting into their best work this week. Their passing
was lethargic and communication between players needs to improve
greatly before they meet the better teams in the competition.
The first goal
came after 25 minutes when Hamish Weld put Oliver Fussey away down
the right, who crossed into the box for Ben Lyttle to climb high
and head home. Sean Zumbraegel coolly completed the scoring in the
first half following a well taken corner by Fussey.
CBHS increased
the work rate in the second half and constantly kept the Cashmere
defence under pressure. The third goal came when Will Rykers passed
down the line for Dorian Grault to run onto and cross for Fussey
to smash the ball home. Cashmere then scored a controversial goal
when the referee over ruled his own linesman who was flagging for
offside. This incident fired up the Boys' High boys and they added
two more goals to the tally. Firstly Stanley Roper sent a diagonal
free kick into the box which Fussey headed down for Grault to finish
and then Lyttle, who had been denied by the post a few minutes earlier,
found the top corner from 22 metres out.
CBHS were again
resolute in defence, Greg Moore and Jae Youn Lee shone in midfield
and it was good to see Lyttle putting himself about after missing
the start of the season with a broken arm.
STAC
15A 1 v CBHS 15A 5 5th May 2010
CBHS
travelled to St Andrews in mid week after school for this rearranged
game deferred from round one.

They carried
on their good work from the weekend, playing as a team and with
patience. Their dominance was rewarded after 8 minutes when a cleared
corner was put back into the box by Greg Moore and when that was
only partly cleared the ball fell nicely for Nick Williams to smartly
score the opening goal. Williams and Moore were involved again before
Oliver Fussey finished off some smooth play down the right hand
side. Fussey scored a second in similar fashion following good work
from Mitch Hobson and Sean Zumbraegel.
In the second
half CBHS kept the STAC goalkeeper busy with several attempts on
goal and with their continued superiority Mr Seddon used the rolling
subs to try some players in a different position. CBHS scored a
fourth goal when the STAC defence again found difficulty in effectively
clearing from a corner and this time Justin Rangi powered home from
15 metres. STAC pulled one back when they took advantage of possibly
CBHS's only defensive mistake. Otherwise, Hamish Weld, Stanley Roper,
Tim Stevens and Will Rykers were very solid the back. CBHS had the
last say when Dorian Grault beat his marker on the left hand side
to shoot past the keeper from a narrow angle.
CBHS
15A 6 v WOOLSTON TECH 1 - 1st May 2010
CBHS brought
their training drills onto the pitch this week and took their opposition
apart. Defenders linked with midfielders and midfielders linked
with strikers so well that often Woolston were chasing shadows.

CBHS went one
goal up after Roper passed the ball forward for Moore to link with
Hobson, who calmly stroked the ball into the net with the Woolston
keeper caught out of position. Hobson scored a second goal when
he finished off a low cross from Fussey. Fussey then scored himself
when he was put through the defence by Grault. Hobson completed
a hat-trick from the penalty spot after a hapless Woolston defender
handled the ball.
At the start
of the second half Woolston briefly made an impression on the game
when they scored a well worked goal. They were then able to keep
CBHS quiet until near the end of the game when Hobson grabbed his
fourth goal from long range. Hobson then turned provider for his
strike partner Fussey to head home for his second.
CBHS can be
pleased with their performance. The strikers did their job and other
outstanding performances came from Moore in midfield and Roper in
defence.
NOMADS
15A 0 V CBHS 15A 1 - 24th April 2010
CBHS 15A kicked
off the season with a hard fought victory at Tullet Park against
Nomads. The teams were quite evenly matched and the result could
quite easily have gone the other way, but CBHS probably deserved
the points because the balance of possession, shots on goal and
corners were in their favour.
In the first
half CBHS created their own problems at the back, getting caught
in possession or being hasty with their clearance efforts. The cohesion
between the back four improved as the game went on. In midfield,
Greg Moore and Sean Zumbraegal worked hard for possession and gave
the game some width with their passing. Dorian Grault, Mitch Hobson
and Oliver Fussey worked tirelessly in attack, giving the Nomads
defence plenty of problems.
CBHS's second
half performance was much more assured; although they had to grateful
to some great defending from Tim Stevens and two superb saves by
Tom Fitall in goal. The Nomads keeper was even busier but somehow
managed to keep a clean sheet until, nearing the end of the game,
a Fussey corner was deflected into the net by one of his own players.
Overall a satisfactory
performance but plenty for the coach and players to work on in the
coming weeks.
