14/08/10 CBHS 2nd XI v Woolston Technical (Away)

This was to be our toughest assignment to date and it was 2nd V 3rd on the ladder. The advantage we had is that we had a game in hand on Woolston and Waimak who we were yet to play and were 1st. So a win today would put a gap between us and them and keep the pressure on Waimak for the title. As the story goes for this season, we were short again and with Jono still out sick (possibly for the season) Tim went into GK yet again. The 1st spell was close as expected, a typical top of the table type of game. They scored first through a break out and then soon after to lead 2-0. We then clawed one back with Chris finishing off a wonderful attack that stretched over half the field. To be fair we should have got 3 or 4 by this stage as we had a lot of chances. They scored again before half time so the 2nd half was going to be tough.

What we used for motivation was the fact that we were in the exact same position as the Halswell game. Down 1-3 at the half and only 9 men. This motivation nearly worked but we just couldn't finish off our opportunities in the 2nd half. We went down 3-4 but by gosh, we deserved to win, we were the better team and some dubious refereeing calls cost us clear chances on goal. I would love to go on about this but I won't…. Anyway they won we didn't but I reckon if we had a full compliment of players and a "neutral" referee, then we would have won easily. Goal scorers: Chris, nick Williams and Mohammed. MOM: Tim Johnstone for an outstanding display in goal.

7/08/10 CBHS 2nd XI v Avon United (Home)

It was taken us over 3 months but finally we have our first game at school. Avon were sitting just below half way in the table so they shouldnt've been a threat. The 1st half hour was tight and very scrappy. And for some reason we were down at the break 0-1. I say some reason because even though it was scrappy, we were still dominating territory and possession. To add insult to this deficit, Alex was ill n the sideline and we were down to 9 men.

The second half was much better with CBHS scoring 6 goals to win 6-4. Mohammed scoring 5 on his own. It could've been different though as they missed a penalty just after the break that would've given them a 2-0 lead. Irony is that Louis scored a spot kick 5 minutes later which started the flow. A couple of late goals by them made it interesting but once that penalty went in, the result was never in doubt. MOM: Chris Dickson for his dogged never give up attitude and fierce tackles.

31/07/10 CBHS 2nd XI v Shirley Boys' High 2nd XI (Away)

After some weeks off with rain and a bye, we were eager to get back into the swing of things. SBHS through my years of experience had always been a tricky task so I wasn't sure what to expect. After a scrappy first 20 minutes, they scored first. But then we replied with 2 quick goals of our own. They equalised soon after but then we dominated the remainder of the 1st half running them ragged by holding the ball just passing it around. We scored 3 more to go into a commanding position at half time, 5-2 up.

The second half was very tight and for around 35 minutes it was played in the middle third. Nobody from either side looked like scoring then out of nowhere Shirley score 2 goals to make it 5-4 with 5 minutes left. We then rallied and shut them out scoring one more to win 6-4. Goal scorers: Chris (4) Nick Williams and Mohammed. MOM: Chris Dickson for again rattling 4 goals in.

3/07/10 CBHS 2nd XI v Halswell United (Home)

Our first game in the promoted league and turns out to be our best performance all year. We started the day with 7 players and we were border line defaulting when the opposition coach denied us that privilege. What a mistake that would turn out to be. So off we went and sure enough they open this scoring. This was to be expected with only 7 men. But to our credit we soldiered on with our mufti uniform as Mohammed had the strip and was "on his way". Garratt scored soon after the restart and it stayed 1-1 until about 30 minutes in. That's when Nick Williams and Moh turned up. Still 9 on 11 you would expect to get beaten. Half time came and we were down 1-3.

After some encouraging signs in the first stanza, the 2nd was awesome. We pegged it back to 2-3 and then 3-3. They responded making it 3-4 with 15 to go. We pressed and pressed and finally levelled with about 8 minutes left. I was screaming for them to push forward with their 9 men for a winner and then the killer blow. Their ref calls a penalty for tripping. Louis calmly slots it home and we win 5-4. Stunning. MOM: The entire team - obvious reasons.

19/06/10 CBHS 2nd XI v Waimak FC (Home)

After finding out during the week that the Division 2 wouldn't start for another week, this clash was purely a warm up. Waimak had done well in their grading games so it was going to be another close encounter for sure. The first half started extremely well for us and we were up 2-0 before we knew it. Chris finishing off some great counter attacks. They pegged 2 goals back themselves to go level at half time. Some great scrambling defence by Alex and Louis made sure they didn't take the lead.

The second half unfortunately was all Waimak. We went down 4-6 but by no means was it disgraceful. Chris bagging all the goals took the limelight but the whole team was to be congratulated for their never give up attitude. We also then find out that they had stacked their team with A grade players which made me think what we could've done if they were playing their original squad. MOM: Chris Dickson for his 4 goals.

12/06/10 v CBHS 2nd XI v Cashmere Wanderers (Away)

Our first game after being promoted for the competition round and it just so happened that we were up against the top team from their grading games. We were 7 from 7 in Division 3 grading and they were 7 from 7 in Division 2 grading. The stage was set for a close tight encounter although we knew they would be a whole level up from what we had been getting. Both clubs needed and wanted the stronger competition and both of our wishes came true. The first half was all Cashmere with only scrambling defence keeping the score to 0-2 by the half. We did have patches and 2 clear cut scoring chances that would have initially put us in front and then to equalise but ultimately didn't collect.

After a rev up at half time, our boys came out firing. Missing Jono in goal and with several niggles and injuries to key players, our 11 were a bit mixed and not the strongest we could put out. But to the credit of everyone, we stuck together and hussled and were rewarded when Chris got onto a scuffed shot from Will and then a flick on by Garrat to roll a goal in after 50 minutes. They replied quickly though to make it 3-1 but we responded through a ripper from Garrat after about 70 minutes. He shot from outside the box and it went bottom corner leaving the keeper scrambling. Again however, we let them in straight away to leave us chasing 2 goals in the final 15 minutes. With 10 minutes to go, Mohammed scrambled and fought hard to score in the top corner to get us going again. We won the 2nd half 3-2 but ultimately lost the game 4-3. A gallant effort with only lapses in concentration costing us, which to Ben and I, says our competitive season, could be a great one. Man of the match for filling in in goal: Tim Johnstone.

5/06/10 CBHS 2nd XI v CBHS 3rd XI (Home)

Our final grading game was up against our school friends from the 3rd XI. School derby's are always difficult but today we proved much too strong for the gallant 3rds. After getting 2 early goals both through Garrat, we cruised through the first 30 minutes. They pulled 2 back but the result was inevitable by half time when we had 5 on the board.

The second half was scrappy at best however. We knew that we needed to lift dramatically when we went up to the higher division next week. The half petered along with neither team scoring a goal for half an hour. The final 15 minutes saw us put 3 more on the board for an 8-2 win. Mohammed scoring a solid hat trick. A win yes but plenty to work on with much tougher opposition to come. Man of the match: Alex.

22/05/10 CBHS 2nd XI v Christs College 3rd XI (Away)

After finding out during the week that there would be a re-grading of our division after the first full round, we were eager to impress and finish this first round unbeaten and topm of the table. With our 3rds looming next week in the final grading game, we wanted to go out and get a good result against College. After a scrappy first 15 minutes, Nick Williams found some space down the left and after 2 cut backs ripped a bullet in the near corner to take the lead. About 20 minutes later Will latched onto the end of a cross and made it 2-0 at the break.

The second spell was a bit more convincing from us. We scored 3 more to Chris (a tap in), Louis (a low near post strike) and Will from an acute angle to win 5-0. We should've scored at least 4 more as we had many shots on goal, but only a few were on target. Our possession was outstanding and we seemed to settle in their half for most of the game. Scrambling defence kept them scoreless and Chubbs at the back made some great runs including 2 powerful shots from distance late on that stung the keeper. Bring on the school derby - be ready 3rd XI... MOM: Chubbs.

15/05/10 - CBHS 2nd XI v Waimak FC (Home)

On a clear but crisp day at Edgar MacIntosh, it was a top of the table clash between ourselves and Waimak. Both teams were unbeaten so the game was sure to be a good one. The game got underway and we couldn't have asked for a better start, scoring 2 goals in the first 5 minutes. Chris scoring both after some great passing and lead up play. We dominated possession and territory for the remainder of the 1st half and lead 4-0 going into the break. Mohammed and Tim scoring great goals of their own.

The second half was a bit different to say the least. Waimak came out a different side and pretty much scored from the restart. They caught us on the hop and made it 4-1 with basically a whole half to play. We still looked patient and composed but they were proving a much tougher proposition in the 2nd spell. As they mounted some more attacks, Alex and the defensive line held true and as a result Nick Williams scored a goal with 15 minutes to play which deflated the opposition. We controlled the pace of the game well to close it out which pleased the coaches. A 5-1 win which keeps us top and looking good. All players contributing from Will up front to Jono in goal. Man of the Match: Alex …

8/05/10 - CBHS 2nd XI v Parklands United (Away)

For the second game in a row, the half time score was 0-0 but the second half was outstanding. After nobody really took control in the first spell, we did start the stronger. At least 3 clear chances came our way in the first 10 minutes but we couldn't take any of them. What was to come in the second half was brilliant.

We began the second similar to the first with plenty of opportunities only this time we took some of them. Goals to Mohammed (2), Ahmed and Chris gave us a 4-0 win and a 3rd clean sheet in 4 games to give us a massive goal difference. Probably the best observation to come out of the game was our discipline and professionalism. Our skipper Louis showed some great leadership under trying circumstances and as a team, we all showed why we are pushing for the title this year. Man of match: Louis Creed.

1/05/10 - CBHS 2nd XI v Hornby United (Home)

On a beautiful day at our second home ground of the year (Hagley Park), we came up against a Hornby side who were going to be more trouble than they should've been. The first half was scoreless with not too many chances created by either side. The only real chance came from a Louis Creed volley that was tipped over the bar by their keeper.

The second half was much better by our boys scoring 4 unanswered goals to win 4-0. The whole of the half was played in their territory with us holding the ball for a lot of the game. Another clean sheet for Jono in goal as well which can only increase his confidence for the remainder of the year. A perfect start to the year with the benchmark now set for the games to come. Parklands were up next. Man of match: Jono Brown.

24/05/10 - CBHS 2nd XI v St Bedes 2nd XI (Away)

In cold wet conditions at Owen Mitchell Park, we came up against a plucky Bedes outfit. The first half was scrappy at best but we did manage to go into the break 3-1 up. Goals to Will (2) and Louis gave us a good buffer at half time. The first goal we conceded for the season was gifted to the opposition via a mistake from a corner. Nontheless a lead is a lead.

The second half was played in rainy conditions which affected the flow of the game. It was a heavy pitch made worse by the rain and fast paced attacks were non existent. With time running out and no addition to the scoreline, David and Chris added late goals to complete a 5-1 win to make it 2 from 2 for the year. A good start but still little bits to work on for the rest of the season. Man of the match: Nick Williams.

17/04/10 - CBHS 2nd XI v Rolleston (Home)

Our first game of the season was at "home" (Edgar MacIntosh park) against a typically strong Rolleston club side. In previous years they had been a tough proposition and as a coach, I had never beaten them. We had had a messy build up for different reasons so today would be interesting. The first half was tight early on with both teams feeling each other out but with some great work at the back by Tim, we took the lead after about 20 minutes through Will up front. Will got his second soon after and completed his hat trick with a stunning sliding volley just before the break.

The second half was blue and black all over. We dominated territory and possession and mounted wave and wave of attack. Seven goals were scored after the break with Mohammed scoring 5 on his own. With Nick Williams chipping in with 2 goals, we finished very strongly winning 10-0. A perfect start ahead of St Bedes 2nd XI next week. Man of the match: Tim Johnstone.
